NedNotes (bnot blog): Covid data sweep 02oct20

Update on the President. While the nation prays for the first family or wishes the Trumps well, a study from Cornell University has cited President Trump as the number-1 source of misinformation on the American epidemic as he has politicised the coronavirus contagion.

The good news is that, in a statement from Walter Reed Naval Hospital, President Trump shunned the teleprompter candidly to assure the people of the United States of America and around the world that he is doing well and still in full command of the office. In this
four minute video statement, he was very gracious toward the First Lady.

B.L.U.F. The bellwether states are making progress except for Oklahoma, a smaller state that reflects the rural spread of the COVID epidemic through remote, often under-served areas in the deep South and Midwest.

Bellwether states. Though the smallest by far of the bellwether states, Oklahoma‘s alarming results this week reflect the rural spread of the coronavirus, which has been accelerating; this trend has become particularly true in Wisconsin. Florida is sending mixed signals with a resurgence of cases after restaurants and bars were permitted to let it rip followed by Governor DeSantis (R) stating that closing schools was a large public policy error.

As schools re-open in California, by far the largest of the gang of five, with aggressive measures to contain the spread of the coronavirus among university students, the state government of Governor Newsom (D) is pushing hard to reverse the disturbing trends in its minority / disadvantaged communities. A recent, comprehensive study out of India, clarifies how the coronavirus savages poorer people and why it does.

Relative to the other large states in the five-state focus group, Tejas continues to struggle moderately but the Lone Star State is addressing the larger COVID questions vigorously. Despite a death toll 55-60% above that national median, but in view of recent performance, Arizonans still fight over mask mandates notwithstanding President Trump’s falling ill to the coronavirus.

Other general news this week. Other general news this week. One possible reason for the faltering progress on contact tracing is cultural: many people do not trust the government or other institutions in disclosing the ‘where-&-who’ of personal movements. For example, a gap in contract tracing has opened up a new micro-hot-spot in rural New Jersey; a traditional religious community apparently prefers not to engage. This cultural friction is rippling throughout the society as the virus becomes increasingly politicised. For example, Trump Admin. political appointees have been hacking the C.D.C. web-site to transmit, under cover of scientific authority, guidance against expert consensus.
